Sony 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Lens Review
The Sony 75-300mm telephoto lens SAL75300 was started with the A100 digital SLR as part of an optional Twin Zoom Lens Kit. While most people it is as part of the A100 Twin Lens Kit, 75-300mm is now also buy individually. As such, it is probably going to get the most popular telephoto for the A100 DSLR be.
The Sony 75-300mm is designed to complement the standard 18-70mm kit lens, greatly extending the range without overlap. In fact, since the 5mm difference between them is negligible, the pair offer a huge range from 18-300mm, providing a 35mm-equivalent range 27-450mm. The telephoto end of the 75-300mm is ideal for portraits, animals and sports events, along with-bring in any kind of distant detail. And since the Sony Alpha A100 body has built-in Super SteadyShot the 75-300mm anti-shake capabilities automatically enjoys.
In this paper we present the Sony 75-300mm zoom through its paces and see how it complements the standard 18-70mm kit lens. We have the optical quality of the reveal to the 75-300mm 18-70mm, compared to what you can expect when switching from one to another. In some cases, leads one better than the others around the 70-75mm mark, we’ll let you know what the objective should be for the best results.
The 75-300mm measures 71x122mm (diameter by length) and extends a further 56mm using a single barrel section when zoomed-into 300mm. The 55mm filter size measures and weighs the lens 460g. A lens hood is included.

It employs a 75-300mm optical design of 13 elements in ten groups with seven aperture blades and has a minimum focusing distance of 1.5m. The lens does not employ internal focusing and actually extends a further 13mm in its entire focusing range. The front part and also rotates while focusing, which is annoying for users of polarizing filters. There is no focus distance scale on the lens, so it is really mostly designed for AF operation.
Concentrating on the 75-300mm was not very fast to shift with the lens at a good second through its entire range. The engines and transmissions were very audible, and divert it to prove, if you could shoot in a quiet room or environment. To be fair, it’s just a little louder than the standard 18-70mm kit lens when focusing, but it’s not just a quiet operator. If the noise of the kit lens does not interfere, when the 75-300mm should be no nasty surprises.
The Sony Alpha A100 features Super SteadyShot which means any lens you attach to enjoy anti-shake capabilities. This is one of the big selling points of the A100 and seen to have a good performance with the 18-70mm kit lens, we were curious to see how effective it would be with the longer 75-300mm. Since the 75-300mm has an effective range of 113-450mm, traditional SLR technology would recommend using a shutter speed of 1/450 or higher, to avoid camera-shake when zoomed in fully. The big question is how Super SteadyShot would treat slower exposures.
Since the camera can stabilize even physically shift the sensor by the same amount, regardless of the lens insert, it is also less effective than the focal length increases. This has always been the case for Canon and Nikon in-lens stabilization of the focal length can be cut in question. The above results show, surely the A100 anti-shake system with lower compensation at longer focal lengths than for shorter, but is also in this one single example of a person on a given day. However, it is an issue which we must be examined closely and look forward to retesting of the Sony A100 with other long lenses in the future to see if the Anti-Shake-effectiveness of the 3.5 stops of compensation available to to keep shorter focal lengths.
