Sony Alpha NEX-5 Review
Since the introduction of the Micro Four Thirds system, changes have taken place in the DSLR market. A couple of manufacturers have Olympus and Panasonic, a new course, which is obviously a hit with consumers set themselves. There are a lot of enthusiasm for the Micro Four Thirds, which assign other, their R & D department to create a similar concept. Including Sony, which has been progress since 2006 with their Alpha DSLR system, also sees a future in small format camera system. During the European market in Croatia, we have witnessed Sony’s answer to the Micro Four Thirds System. The introduction of the Sony NEX-5 and Sony NEX-3 alpha is now a fact.
During the last PMA 2010, a Sneak Peak has been given the prototype, but from that moment on, no more information was about what are still released. It is surprising that both Sony NEX cameras introduced relatively quickly, and still managed to get both cameras in the stores before the holiday season. As of this writing is still not known what are the exact times and suggested retail prices. We will quickly get to them. I was a little play with the top model to get the Sony-NEX-5, a good first impression of this new system camera.
Sony NEX-5 is the current top model of the NEX-series of cameras. First, the differences with the NEX-3 seem to be pretty minimal. At least if we deviate from the camera specifications. The difference is mainly found in the ability to record a video clip in 1080i high definition quality. In other words, Sony is the NEX-5 capable of video recording in 1920×1080, 17Mbps resolution. The Sony NEX-3 supports a maximum video resolution of 1280×720, 9Mbps. There is also a difference in the appearance. The Sony NEX-5 body is made of lightweight aluminum. That’s the Sony NEX 5 10 grams lighter, and thus the world’s lightest camera system.
During the launch, the press have the ability to link the first photos with the new Sony cameras NEX. We will share the first Sony camera NEX test photos with you as soon as possible. The Sony NEX-5 of the resolution of 14.2 megapixels is a bit higher than the Olympus Pen cameras and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras (12 megapixels), and almost equal to the 14.6 megapixel Samsung NX10 (Samsung’s own version of the Micro-System camera). The number of pixels is almost irrelevant, given that the performance of the image sensor and image processing in the camera is actually more important.

The Sony NEX-5, is, like the NEX-3 equipped with a newly designed sensor, Exmor CMOS APS HD. This is an image sensor with a large surface area compared with that of the Micro Four Thirds sensors, and in terms of dimensions, equal to that of the Samsung NX10 sensor. The effective amount of 14.2 million pixels is more than enough to live to the expectations for almost any purpose. We are naturally curious about the pixel quality, and we can hope, the first technical test in our DIWA lab was conducted by the Kai Thon, DIWA test manager for the Awards, as soon as possible. The results of technical tests in the coming comprehensive Sony NEX-5 assessment shall be presented.
It is noteworthy that the specifications of both Sony and the Sony 5-NEX NEX-3 mention the panoramic sweep 3D-Ready feature. What this means is not entirely clear to us yet, but we hope to return to that shortly. In an article that was published earlier (Sony Alpha 3D), we discussed Sony’s plans for digital 3D imaging. It is obvious that Sony is set to 3D wagering, particularly in the area of home entertainment. This area is meant for the consumer: just 3D entertainment. There is also a creative side, which of course is the production of 3D content. It will therefore be possible, panoramic pictures with the Sony and Sony NEX NEX-5-3 play, and take it in 3D on a BRAVIA TV 3D.
The Sony NEX-5 is a high-resolution LCD display XtraFine TruBlack (920.000 points) and can be equipped handy to be tilted up and down. In this way, photos can easily from low on the ground to be shot high over his head. The display of pictures, and definitely the menu are excellent. The colors are vibrant and are paired with high contrast. The user interface is new, with the beginners and the experienced photographer is able to easily control the Sony NEX-5.
Sony has a new system designed for the NEX-mount, called the E-mount. This means that in practice we can also expect new lenses, especially designed for this system. The Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is a standard lens, which is expected with the Sony NEX-5 kit delivered. A second lens is the Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5 6.3 with which a 11x enlargement can be made. The LZ-FE1 Sony adapter is optional, which can replace the current Sony Alpha lenses are combined. Consideration should be noted that lenses can only focus manually in this combination.

Another remarkable feature of the Sony NEX-5 and the NEX-3 is the lack of a built-in flash. Although both cameras with a standard compact flash-mountable, which may also be placed on the so-called smart accessory shoe, this is an additional action that I do not have to do better. On the other hand, the practice will show how often lightning will be really necessary. The ISO settings go up to 12.800 and at the high ISOs are of high quality, this can make large extent for the lack of additional flash. We also expect to be equipped the most of Sony’s E lenses with known SteadyShot image stabilization, so for 3-4 stops longer shutter times, while maintaining a low ISO should be possible.
Besides the standard zoom lenses, Sony also leads the nice E 16mm f/2.8 lens. These so-called pancake lens combined with the Sony NEX-5, form a very compact camera with a little extra weight format. Such a combination is highly desired by photographers street, but also enthusiastic photographers who shoot landscapes and architecture buildings will be able to estimate the correct value. Sony talks about an additional optional VCL-ECU 1 Ultra-Wide-Converter and ECF1 a VCL-fisheye converter, with which the angle can be further expanded.
to conquer with the introduction of the Sony NEX-5, Sony throws himself into battle for the coveted market share. It’s an interesting time in which it is very likely that the status quo (meaning Canon and Nikon) is slowly but surely take on a different position. Until now, with the exception of some patents, it was pretty quiet on the Canon and Nikon fronts. In the meantime, the valuations are trained and we are hearing rumors nationally and internationally, that the days of the mirror (DSLR) are coming to an end. We can not honestly imagine why. Especially for consumers who regularly photographers, the masses who do not really wait, ‘big’ DSLR cameras with large lenses?
We hear much noise from the manufacturers, indicating that it will hold in the coming Photokina in September this year. The bi-annual event in the field of imaging could very well be the place for some spectacular innovative introductions this time. There is much to discover, while there is much at stake. We look forward to a warm summer, but we are already longing for the end of the summer! The arrival of the Sony cameras NEX3 NEX-5 and the system provides more attention to the small format camera system and Micro Four Thirds System, a development that we can only cheer!
