Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro Lens Review
Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 macro was introduced back in December 1987 so this is one of the oldest elements in the composition, and it seems as if the Canon lens is stopped with the recent introduction of the new EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM (w / cut range images ). Manual focus feel Ok. The focusing ring is not quite smooth around and typical for lenses of that era, focusing feels a little scratchy, but in the end it does the job.
If ask to increase the number of internal barrel of the lens: it is a combination of life-size converter (1:4 – 1:1).
Optical object consists of 9 elements in 8 groups without any special elements. Lens 6 blade diaphragm. Typical for all true macro lenses it has a floating system in order to ensure constant performance at all focusing distances. Filter size 52.
At only 280 g, it is very lightweight lens and the dimension of 67x63mm it is also very compact.Nevertheless, it remains little more than conventional lenses 50mm. That compared with EF 50mm f/1.8 II.
The build quality is decent with a metal mount and the outer plastic casing of good quality. As already mentioned, the focus ring can be a little better, though.

EF 50mm f/2.5 macro lens is pretty boring, but it provides very high performance, despite its ancient design. Construction quality pretty decent, though not stellar. By today’s standards, micro-motor, and a little outdated. The same applies to life-size converter, which is needed to achieve 1:1 magnification. The new EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM macro has been improved in these respects – at higher prices and less around the image.
So if you are looking for affordable, high performance standard lens with macro capabilities EF 50mm f/2.5 macro can still be recommended.
