With a zoom ratio of 13.9x, offers Tamron AF18-250mm new F 3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens single-lens a good option for DSLR photographers, whose cameras have APS-C Imager. is appropriate with less than a pound with the included lens hood, covers focal lengths equivalent to 27-375mm equipped, when on a Nikon, Pentax or Sony DSLR camera or 28.8-400mm on a Canon DSLR.

Tamron has a solid track record for developing extended-range zoom lenses and his designers have different strategies are used to the new lens is relatively small and light, most of them on the successful AF18-200mm F 3.5-6.3 XI Tues LD-based think Aspherical (IF) Macro lens, which is only 0.2 mm in diameter less than 0.6 mm and a length. The optical system uses an LD (Low Dispersion) glass element and one AD (Anomalous Dispersion) lens in the first group to minimize on-axis chromatic aberration.

The optical imaging has been shown above how the Tamron AF18-250mm is mounted.

Two hybrid aspherical elements are included to minimize the spherical aberration and astigmatism, while the third lens group has been configured to supply power to maximum zoom, while a high optical quality. Interior surfaces were used to minimize flare and ghosting caused by reflections from glass surfaces within the lens.

Compact and surprisingly light for its reach, the AF18-250mm lens is solidly built and has a broad, rubberized zoom ring is comfortable to use and a very smooth zooming and positive action and supports the fast AF system of the Canon EOS 400D was used for our tests. A small manual focusing ring near the front of the lens has similar rubber coating, and was also very easy to use with the test camera. The included “flower-shaped” lens hood is a bit fiddly to assemble, but also offers excellent glare control. It returns to the lens when not in use. A clip-on lens cap is also available.

The lens helps position markings for 18, 35, 50, 70, 100, 200 and 250mm focal length (35mm equivalent), making it easy to pre-set a zoom ratio. A zoom lock prevents to extend the lens when the lens is carried down on a DLSR camera face. It is rather small and requires that you use a fingernail to it on and off, but still effective. Inner focusing system allows the lens with angle-critical filters like polarisers and graduates will be employed.

A striking feature is the ability of this lens to focus down to 45 cm in its entire zoom range. Some impressive close-ups are possible with the longer focal length settings!

Performance

It is asking a lot from each optical system covers a zoom range of 13.9 times, but the Tamron AF18-250mm lens works surprisingly well. Not unexpectedly, was his best performance in our Imate evaluations with openings between f 5.6 and f 16 and focal length of 50mm and 70mm. Chromatic aberration was low throughout the entire zoom range, although we found traces of colored hem in some shots at longer focal lengths.

Distortion was also detected at both ends of the zoom range, with slight barrel distortion at the position from about 50mm and 18mm pincushioning. Neither was severe enough to interfere with everyday photography. Edge-to-edge sharpness was very good and we found no evidence of vignetting at the wide-angle lens openings. Flare seemed to be well controlled when the lens was pointed at the sun. Bokeh (background defocused foreground blur) was attractive – but not so outstanding.

Subjective evaluation of our test shots showed them a little lacking in contrast, although the environmental conditions at the time of our test shots undoubtedly influenced. We see this not as a big problem, because it is easy enough to increase the contrast, if the images will be edited. It will also have below average to be advantageous for the RAW files, however, before being converted into 16-bit TIFF files.

Overall, the Tamron AF 18-250mm F 3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro lens is a good choice for photographers, one single, all-purpose lens for the DSLR cameras want. Although its performance can not be with the standard of the best prime lenses – or even zoom with a limited zoom range – it’s an excellent performer for a long zoom lens. It is also fast enough to be useful for travelers who appreciate its compact size, light weight and excellent handling properties appreciate.
