Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM IF Lens Review
Sigma’s new 18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM is a All-in-one lens for digital photographers with APS-C size (DX) sensors, which do not want more than one lens to bear. Covering focal lengths from 35mm equivalent of 27mm to 375mm with the most camera brands (28.8mm to 400mm on Canon bodies) provides a 13.8 times zoom ratio. An integrated hybrid optical image stabilization is provided, Shake Reduction in both shots and the viewfinder image.
Build quality is above average for the price of this lens was. The mounting plate is made of stainless steel and polycarbonate covering a solid feel. The zoom is smooth and positive movement and a lock is in place to extend it if the lens is down to prevent (although it showed no evidence in this way during our tests).
Optical design is very complex, although similar to the Company 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 OS lens current. Both lenses have 18 elements in 14 groups and four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) include glass elements and three aspherical lens elements to counteract the common aberrations. Both have the same f/3.5-6.3 maximum aperture.

The new lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm at all focal lengths and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.4 (about one third life size), so that it can be used for close-ups. Inner focusing system allows a user to angle-critical attachments like polarisers and graduated filters fit
Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM), which is driven by ultrasonic waves is certainly built for quiet autofocus at relatively high speeds. Super multi-layer coatings on lens elements reduce the incidence of flare and ghost images. Has installed about 100 mm from the camera (without lens), the lens protrudes from a further 78mm when the 250mm focal length increased. The structure consists of three barrels, the inner with the optical elements, the middle with ‘engraved macro reproduction ratio of 1:3.4 at the full zoom extension to 1:12.8 at 18mm focal length.

The focus and zoom rings are mounted on the outer cylinder. The former is about 22 mm wide with a 10mm wide-ribbed, rubberized band, which offers a comfortable and secure grip. Engraving on the ring just in front of this band are marked in feet and meters distance, the 0.45 meters (the next priority) to infinity. In manual focus mode, these clearances are lined against a mark on the front of the lens (which accommodate the inner barrel out torches to the front element).
Behind the focus ring (closer to the camera), then, is the zoom ring, which is about 48 mm wide and has a 33 mm thick, grooved rubber coating that provides excellent grip. An engraved scale on the rear edge (nearest the camera) carries markings for the 18mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 80mm, 135mm and 250mm focal length positions. These are lined against a white mark on the non-moving part of the lens barrel. On the left side of the main barrel are two sliders, a switch for switching between automatic and manual focus and the other for turning the OS and stabilization. The zoom lock is located on the back of the zoom ring, directly on the AF/MF slider. Screw into the filter before the 72 mm threaded lens.

The OS image stabilization system has only two modes: on and off. You can work no stabilization to only one direction to get the best results with panning shots, but the system seemed to handle panning quite well. The viewfinder image is also stabilized, making it easier to compose for both pots and normal shots with longer focal length settings.
This lens will be available with mounts for Sigma, Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony entry-and mid-level DSLRs. It is with a petal-shaped lens hood, front and rear cover and a soft case (although the supplied lens hood and case were not provided with a photo retrospective of the review lens).
