Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Lens Review
On a broader perspective than previous standard of Nikon f/2.8 constant aperture standard zoom lens that is 24-70mm is a very versatile professional-quality optics. As with their other updated Pro lenses, the 24-70mm sports a set of features, including inner focusing system, Silent Wave Motor for fast and nearly silent focusing with full time manual override, ED glass for chromatic aberration, and Nano Crystal Coat, which promises to do reduce the lens resistant to ghosting and flare.
Features and handling
The new lens feels smaller and lighter than its predecessor, but it is great. Despite its size, it resembles perfectly on my D700 mounted with or without MB-D10 grip. A large hood is included, which allows the body of the lens towards the front element and to move her inside the hood, depending on the chosen focal length attached. The lens is the longest in the setting shorter 24mm to 50mm and then a little more back to 70mm. The zoom barrel is to turn nice and easy, only needs a light touch in order to set it in motion. On my test device, the mechanism is nice and smooth between 24mm and 50mm, but seems to grind a little longer focal lengths. This could be one quirk of this model, though.

Focus is done internally, so the front element does not rotate at all. The Silent Wave Motor for focus is achieved to boot quickly and accurately. The lens had no trouble keeping up with erratic subjects when mounted on a D700.
Metal is used for the majority of construction and so the lens feels reassuringly solid and well together. In fact I would go so far as to say, it was a pleasure to have with this lens by the handling and performance.

Performance
Throughout the zoom range of 24-70mm produces good resolution in the middle, the corners are less sharp, but acceptable for most applications. Stopping down to f/4 produces a massive increase in resolution in the mid resolution at longer focal lengths. This lens is very, very sharp in the middle. The resolution at the edges of the image area continues to improve at this shorter focal lengths up to about f/1, where the lens at the same time resolution on the screen such as in some laptops review.
At 70mm, more clarity on the uniform image area, and the resolution f/2.8 actually slightly improved. Selecting f/4 is still the highest resolution in the center, as well as with shorter focal lengths. Overall, it is very impressive, something with the corners behind the center resolution. This lens delivers images with real bite them, probably produced in part, to the excellent contrast through this lens, which helps with the appearance of sharpness.

Chromatic aberrations are well controlled run for a shade over 0.75 pixel widths, worst, on the edges of the image area used for 35mm f/2.8 and is. At 70mm, the chromatic aberration is so well controlled it is hardly worth the effort.
As with other large aperture increases light loss is present, but on this lens, it is not too much of a problem. are on the corners and 24mm f/2.8 1.6 stops darker than the center, stopping down improves the uniformity and the decrease of f/5.6 disappeared almost completely. Vignetting is approximately the same throughout the zoom range, with the corners to 1.7 stops darker than the center at 70mm.

Verdict
Although not very exotic, the standard zoom lens covers a range of most photographers is not expendable. The Nikon 24-70mm leads, as you would expect from a lens of this caliber and price. The production quality is excellent, the focus is fast and above all the images sharp and high contrast in a number of conditions and will make its way into many photographers kit bag to find as a result, despite the 1,200 plus price tag. Although there are cheaper alternatives available, they are rarely provide the quality, this lens does. As a result, it will be good value for you if you are not willing to downgrade in quality.
