With a crop factor of 1.6, there is an equivalent of 35mm length in terms of 96mm, very close to their popular 100mm Zoom Lens, the 100mm f 2.8 Macro. As normal with the Canon lenses is the mid-range of the EF-S 60mm Macro certainly build up to the job. Centrally located to date a large distance window that is, by convention, marked in meters and feet. However, there is an additional line markings on the magnification that you achieve in this setting that the full 1:1 to 1:5 at 0.44m (highlight 1.43ft). For some, this may prove as useful and is a nice touch. The manual focus ring, which can be used over-ride the autofocus without switching is generous enough, even the biggest hands, and, as is quite normal for Canon lenses is nice torque.

A macro lens is the autofocus quick and surprisingly quiet, a product of USM mechanism. All the focus is internal to give the added advantage that the lens does not extend in length, not the front element rotates during operation carried out. This makes the use of filters in the 52mm thread a lot easier to operate. It is provided for mounting the ET-67B lens hood, although this extra one.

Optical quality

One of the problems emerging with Canon’s EF-S series of lenses that you do not know really what you would receive in the form of performance requirements, apart from price differences. They all have the same nomenclature so the 55mm EF-S 18 “kit” lens is clustered by the excellent EF-S 10 22mm and no one say that they will not be far apart. This job, the EF-S 60mm Macro, as the price is somewhere between the two. Distortion was also indicates with a value of -0.237%, a very slight pincushion that hardly detectable treated with the Mk 1 eyeball.

Chromatic aberrations are well sorted and are well within acceptable limits throughout the frame and across the aperture range. The contrast is also good to Canon’s high standard and is the area where they can achieve many of their following, but for a newly developed lens, the resolution is slightly disappointing. Do not get me wrong, it is appropriate for the cameras for which it is designed and give positive results, as it has done for me. Where guests also wide open at f 2.8, which together with the 7-blade diaphragm and the ideal focal length, a good omen for portrait photography and other areas where a nicely blurred background is not required. Another plus is the ability to close the aperture, f 32 if you want on an unusual f 2.8 lens and a bonus for those, the maximum depth-of-field.

Conclusion

I wait for about Canon’s commitment to the EF-S mount and the limited number of cameras that fit it will be convinced. However, if you’re one of them and not even plan to full-frame in the future, then this upgrade is a powerful and versatile lens. Note however, that the minimum focus distance measured by the sensor and aircraft to get a 1:1 image of the front of the lens only some 85mm from the subject. On an APS-C sensor but it seems the ideal focal length for portraits and possibly to find much favor in this discipline.
