Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Lens Review

Idon’t recommend the original G-version, for example, how the lack of ED glass means that there is significant chromatic aberration issues, which are easy to recognize. You’ll notice that I thought the ED version was pretty decent when I first checked it, and it is still modest, a tele-priced option for Nikon DSLR users in the coming years . The primary complaints about the ED version has been its tendency to concentrate slowly, hunting and the slow variable aperture (f 5.6 at 300mm, you can at shutter speeds, keeps the challenge of hand, put in a good light).

What everyone wanted was a version of the ED lens with VR and AF-S. That’s almost what we got.

This is a very complex lens, more complex than another, replaced with 17 elements in 12 groups. In comparison, the previous construction 13 elements in 9 groups. Two elements are ED (low dispersion) glass. The aperture is a 9-blade type, with slightly rounded blade, and seems to have easily brought into position (probably) because of the VR-additive. This is not a tweak of the old lens design: it seems to be many new terms, even if it contributes to the outside, a certain resemblance to its predecessor, and it remains a part of the design parameters (focal distance, for example).

You’ll notice that I “almost said, what we got.” You’re probably wondering what that meant. Well, there are a handful of important changes that may have some implications for the transition from old to new by you:

  • The maximum aperture at 70mm is now instead of f 4.5 f 4
  • The filter size is now 67mm instead of 62mm.
  • The focus and zoom rings exchanged places.
  • The optics are … well, you have to wait for the power to it.

Of these changes, which bothers me is the change in filter size. Nikon has lost its simplicity, 52 62 77, and now seems to think it’s perfectly okay to make only filter sizes across the board (usually these days 62 67 72 77) to. In particular, the old lens, a decent candidate for the 5T and 6T close-up lenses that Nikon. Unfortunately, not only you can not use it to make the new version of the lens, but Nikon does not seem to be the close-up lenses in general no longer a double loss. (Shortly after posting the article, several people commented that a 67-62mm step-down ring with the 5T to the 70-300mm when mounted on a Nikon DSLR camera. True. That seems fine for larger work as imaging circle necessary. However, if you so with a full-frame body, digital or film, you get vignetting. Several people pointed out that Nikon is in line, because the 18-70mm , 18-135mm and 70-300mm, all shares of size 67mm. That’s true, but we need much more than “some sharing of values between some objective,” we standardize our filter sets. We need a stronger and more forward-looking statements Nikon that “we will make lenses in the X, Y, and Z-filter ring sizes in the future and try to stay on that as best we can. Please note that Nikon had five different filters set ring systems for the supply R1C1; that’s crazy. Stilll, it does appear that all my 62mm filters and accessories are no longer very useful.)

Unlike some recent consumer zooms from Nikon, the lens has a focal point scale. But the big additions are VRII (second generation Vibration Reduction) and AF-S (Silent Wave) internal focus motor. The promise of the two supplements is a lens to be focused more quickly, while lighter handheld.

On the side of the camera’s focus ring are a series of three buttons:

  • Manual Focus Button: In the M A position the lens works as usual (autofocus with manual override). In the M position, the lens focuses only manually.
  • VR-key: In the “ON” position, active with the VR, in the OFF position, VR is not used.
  • Type VR button: In the Normal position is “not trying to pan VR recognize and correct it. In the active position of all VR takes movement.
  • There is no tripod mount on the lens. The front of the lens does not rotate during zoom, focus or during surgery.
