Canon PowerShot S90 Review
The Canon PowerShot S90 is almost minuscule in comparison to the G11, it can be easily slipped into a jeans pocket, to be taken everywhere. It measures 3.94 inches wide, 2.3 high and 1.2 deep, tipping the scales at 8 ounces is fully charged. The G11 is bigger and weighs 14 ounces. That makes it almost a DSLR, but it is not nearly as portable as the S90.
This is a very clean searched, dressed in black and digicam with a minimal number of stickers, buttons and bells – but there are some hidden whistles. The front has stabilized 3.8x optical zoom, with a nice 28-105mm focal length. In comparison, the G11 has a potent 5x 28-140mm lens. One of the crucial differences between these two cameras and the sea of available digital cameras is the fact that S90 has a large aperture f/2.0 lens, an absolutely crucial to the host spec quality shots in low light. The Panasonic LX3, a universally lauded camera is f/2.0, but its 2.5x zoom has a range of only 24-60mm. It is wider, but you really give a lot in the telephoto range. That is, the picture quality was so good, we could not hold that against them!

Around the lens, the S90 is one of the hidden pleasures, a click on the control ring, the film feels like a gray day. This very cool ring represents different things depending on the mode you are in, or the function that you designate. In the car, you can switch between the focal lengths (28, 35, 50, 85 or 105mm). In Program AE, it fits the focus manually, or the function you want. This is connected to the control dial to the standard four-way controller on the back. In other words, between the two, you have lots of tweaks at your fingertips, which is rare on a compact point-and-shoots. If you love fine adjusting f-stops, ISO, shutter speed and the like, you are really on with this camera.
Other than a pinhole camera microphone and an auto focus assist light, the rest of the front is clean as a whistle.
The top of the camera has a pop-up flash (like the SX200 IS), the power switch, a ring button, the zoom around the shutter control, and the mode dial. The dial has the usual PASM and custom options, together with SCN for access to 18 scene modes and a movie option. This camera does not offer HD video recording is only 640×480 pixels SD recordings – which is a disappointment. There is also an option for shooting in low light candlelit scenes. Herel ranges from ISO 320 to 12,800 (!), But the resolution drops to 2.5MP. We’ll get into this in the performance section.

The back is a quality 3-inch LCD, 461K pixels, a fine assessed to find the best you into a point-and-shoot controls (DSLR-hit 921K). On the right side of the screen are links, playback, display and menu buttons, along with the four-way controller with a center button, surrounded by a knob. There is also a small speaker. On the right side compartments for mini-USB and HDMI-out (are again no HD video), while on the bottom is the tripod mount, and slot for the battery and SD card. The battery is at 220 shots per CIPA, a rather weak book. In comparison, the G11 390.
