Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens Review
The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f 3.5-4.5 USM Canon Ultra-wide zoom lens solution for its lineup of APS-C DSLRs. Its zoom range equivalent to about ~ 16-35mmon full-frame cameras. The EF-S naming refers to Short back focus design which is only compatible with APS-C EOS SLRs starting with the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). EF-S lenses have an outstanding rear element which requires a special mirror design to avoid a collision of mirror and the rear part of the lens. The basic idea is to reduce the distance of the lens to translate the sensor, it can lead to a better lens design – on paper at least.
One of the things that you notice at first contact is the (pseudo-) IF Design – the lens does not extend when zooming. It is a moving hose after the zoom position (based on full-frame Canon Ultra-Wide Zoom), but this has no effect on the physical length of the lens. It still makes sense, a filter to add this part of the lens. Officially, the lens is not sealed and therefore not sift though – this feature is limited to the last class L lenses.

The build quality feels a bit better compared to their cousins as the EF-S 17-85mm f 4-5.6 IS USM. The focus ring remains in line with the usual consumer-grade quality, but the broad rubberized zoom ring feels smooth and comfortable. The plastic quality is very decent (not yet though) L-class quality. The constant length over the entire zoom range certainly helps to keep the positive impression.
The lens has a very fast and near silent ring-type USM (ultrasonic) AF drive which time manual focusing in one-shot AF mode offers. The AF accuracy was spot on during the tests.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f 3.5-4.5 USM is build a very solid package with a combination of very decent quality and very good, if not impressive optical results. The resolution is very high, 10mm and 14mm, and 22mm still pretty good. If something vignetting at wide open aperture could be better. The center of power over the entire range with generally good borders excellent. The level of distortions is surprisingly low and CAs are fairly well under control (for an ultra-wide angle lens). Flare is also relatively well under control.
