Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens Review

The Canon EF 70-300mm f 4-5.6 IS USM is an update of the existing EF 75-300IS lens. The IS system from the 1st Generation to the 3rd Generation, which means that now can deliver about 3 stops of stabilization, and it has updated both 2-axis (normal) and 1-axis (panning) modes. It has also installed a system that will automatically turn off when the lens is on a stable tripod.

AF function will be improved if the lens is still a micro USM motor uses, instead of a real ring-USM, so it is not the full-time manual focusing. Optical coatings for the digital use of state and Canon have been optimized, that had been used “lens design” to optimize performance. Since the new 70-300 lens instead of 75-300 and has 15 elements in 10 groups and not the 12 elements in 9 groups of 75-300, it is logical to assume that the new lens has a different (due to possibly has similar) optical design. The new lens also contains 1-UD glass element according to the Canon website, which can improve the performance and the MTF plots (see below) in the lens may be substantially better performance than the old 75-300 IS lens, especially at 300mm can and should even surpass the $ 1300 EF 70-300 4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens diffractive optics, if you believe the MTF plots of land.

According to the Canon website, the EF 70-300mm f 4-5.6 USM is scheduled for September – although Amazon lists it as from mid-October. The price will be around $ 650.

This is a very interesting lens. The existing 75-300 4-5.6IS USM is one of my most used lens, despite its compromises in performance at the long end. It’s small, light, the focal range covers most I can, and the handheld. The new lens promises to be similar, but with better optics, AF and IS. It is expensive at around $ 200, but it pays well.

Of course some will say, “why did not they make it into a real lens with a ring USM motor and full-time manual focus?” And that a very good question. Have I think it would have $ 100 added to the cost, so if Canon wanted to reduce the price, they can also use the micro USM decided was good enough.

For those looking for a telephoto zoom, the EF 70-200 4L obvious and alternative, with the same price or slightly cheaper. It is an “L” lens, the optics are great, it can be taken TCs – but it has not, and it is larger then the 70-300IS. Another difficult decision for Canon users!
