Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Review

1

Ask a group of photographers, what their favorite lens is – and you will probably hear the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens mentioned. It is sharp, small, lightweight, inexpensive and with an aperture F/1.4, fast.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a house with many photographers – from professionals to casual – for several reasons.

The first reason for the popularity of the Canon lens is the image quality.

Although it is soft wide open, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is fis 2 and very sharp, if not more, up to 2.8 or smaller. Corners are soft until f/2 on 1.6 points and 2.8 points FOVCF to full screen. Strong atrium f/1.4 is available with a soft, dreamy look with some CA chromatic aberration. Colors and contrast (after the atrium takes at f/2 or so) are very nice. The 50 f/1.4 ‘s 8-blade aperture creates a good foreground background blur quality. Light loss is felt by f/2 on a full-frame body when mounted on a 1.6 FOVCF body, light loss is noticeable only through f/1.6 or so. My exposures with this lens run about 1/3 stop brighter than most of my other lenses.

The small size (wxl: 2.9 “x 2″ 73.8mm x 50.5mm) and light weight (10.2 are oz 290g) are partly responsible for the popularity enjoyed by the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. This lens is mounted no effort to wear – or in a jacket pocket for use as needed. Overall, the build quality is decent but not outstanding. While the metal mount is good, the focus ring fit and function is only adequate. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens has a quiet but not-so-well-damped micro USM (Ultrasonic Motor) motor – this is good, but not as good as the ring-type USM motors in many of the higher quality Canon lenses. FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing is supported. The 50 f/1.4 extends up to 5 16″ while the focus – not turning the filter itself.

The image quality of Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is similar to the much more expensive Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM at 50mm at the same apertures. In fact, I would be the edge in the corner image quality of the 50mm f/1.4 from f/2.8 to f 4.0 enter. Otherwise, the two lenses are similar. Color was also similar between the two. When you choose between these two lenses, the image quality should not be a differentiator for you.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is very useful for low-light indoor shots where a flash is not permitted, appropriate or desirable. It works very well in a church or a gym for example.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a good lens and focal length for full body portraits. Note that when mounted on a 1.6 FOVCF body will need some more space to achieve the full-body portrait. At these points, making this lens a nice head shoulders portrait lens too.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a good travel lens – especially for low-light situations not addressed simply by a general purpose lens. When space is scarce and the low weight is important, this lens is right for you.

If you only need a 50mm focal length, this lens is a good choice. Overall, I think the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a good lens – and a very good value.
